Next Wednesday, the liberal group Progress NC will host the Garden Party Against Hate inside Governor Pat McCrory’s house. The party is thrown in support of gender equality and will feature the Air Horn Orchestra.

NC State junior Clint Bowman recently created a nonprofit to promote North Carolina folk artists to new, young audiences. The concept is to use a small series of concerts to expose artists without a label to new fans. The 20-year old began the project as an assignment for an arts entrepreneur class and made the nonprofit a reality during his summer break. Bowman hopes to expand the project over time.

An old school house has become an outlet for vision, hope, and music. Jay Miller renovated the former Murphey School in Durham County to be used as a place for nonprofits to gather and music to be played. The school’s history is detailed and its current renovation is detailed. The old school building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Robert Dowling is the winner of a 2009 Indy Citizen Award for improving his community. Dowling is director of the nonprofit housing program Community Home Trust which works to provide affordable housing for lower income residents in Orange County. His knowledge of finance, real estate development, negotiation skills, and management skills have helped make the once failing group a vital part of the community.

Reggie Edwards is the winner of a 2008 Indy Citizen Award for positively impacting her community. Edwards helps empower women with their health, relationship, and financial issues through her nonprofit, The Encouraging Place. The nonprofit group runs a variety of programs, meetings, and camps in the Triangle area to provide fellowship and a safe space to talk. The nonprofit often targets women in tough circumstances, women living homeless shelters, women coming out of prison, or living with HIV or AIDS.

The Teaming for Technology program at the Raleigh Boys Club has paired with players in the Carolina Football Development League to teach them how to refurbish computers. As part of the Teen Tech program, the players will then teach middle-school boys how to refurbish computers. The program encourages mentoring and the computers are then donated to schools, nonprofit or community organizations, or low-income children. This program helps teens acquire marketable skills and helps to eliminate the digital divide in the state.

Chapel Hill’s Judy Hallman is the executive director of RTPNet. RTPNet helps provide information technology service to over 100 nonprofit and community organizations in North Carolina. Before helping start RTPNet, Hallman worked for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and helped introduce computers and the Internet to the university. Hallman is retiring from her job soon, but will continue to do similar work developing open-source content management software for nonprofits.

El Futuro is the winner of a 2007 Indy Citizen Award. El Futuro is a nonprofit mental health center dedicated to treating the state’s underserved, and largely uninsured, Latino population. Founded by Luke Smith in Carrboro the group pooled the efforts of therapists and psychiatrists who spoke Spanish and were familiar with the culture of area Latinos. Staff members treat everything from immigration-related trauma and depression to sexual addiction and alcoholism through building relationships with their clients.

The talent pool of military veterans is deep, and Bunker Labs is offering a program for veterans interested in being entrepreneurs. The nonprofit supported 48 businesses in North Carolina in 2016 and is looking to impact the unemployment rate among veterans through education and mentorship.
