Don Beaver lobbied for the Charlotte Knights to return to the Queen City for over a decade. Despite some pushback, the Knights’ Uptown Charlotte stadium broke ground in 2012 and the first season in the new park was in 2015. The location of the new ballpark has made the Knights one of the most successful minor league franchises in the nation and the area around the park has developed economically.

Sean Schlusser, owner of Catch On Seafood in the Plaza Midwood neighborhood of Charlotte, values customer expectations for local food. He only sells fresh fish, and constantly checks with his suppliers to insure that his fish is in fact fresh. However, with more big companies buying out smaller fisheries, tracing the source of fish has become more difficult.

Common Market is a popular restaurant and marketplace in Charlotte. The original location opened in the Plaza Midwood neighborhood in 2002 and another opened in South End in 2009. Sadly, the South End location closed in July 2017, but co-owners Blake Barnes, Chuck Barger, and Graham Worth have found a new location just 1,153 paces from the old spot.

Artist Dan Nance paints historical renderings of events in the Charlotte area and has been doing so for twenty years. His collection has been reunited for the first time at the Charlotte Museum of History for an exhibit titled: “Charlotte’s Road to Revolution: Paintings by North Carolina Artist Dan Nance.”

173 people have drowned in Charlotte-area lakes, rivers, ponds, and pools since 2005. Six times between 2005 and 2015, Mecklenburg County led the state in annual drowning deaths. Most drowning deaths are of men and boys and most are preventable. Knowing risks and prevention measures may save lives in the future.

Included in Leon Berry’s profile were his inspiration for taking up the trade (his father), a description of basket making, their purposes (ex. carrying cotton). Concluding the profile was the extent of agrarian popularity for a trade that, in the Berry family at least, may conclude with him.
