The astronomical cost of university tuition and fees, plus the loans often used to pay this debt, has left many legislators seeking resolutions for the short and long term negative impacts. Solutions included the “last dollar” grant for high school graduates students with a GPA of 3.5 or above and encouraging more community college attendance. Statistics indicating the enormity of this crisis and feasibility of a community college degree include graduates defaulting on loans and students who graduate from community colleges debt free.

During World War 11, Camp Montford Point in Jacksonville served as the segregated training camp for the first African-American Marines. The Marine Corps was the last branch of the military to accept African-Americans. The Montford Camp Marines broke down racial barriers for future African-American recruits.

The United States Coast Guard, created by Congress in 1790, is cited as America's oldest maritime service. North Carolina’s Coast Guard, employed in nine stations anchored along the Crystal Coast, has provided service on a national level, in missions such as rescuing 14 of 16 HMS Bounty crew members during Hurricane Sandy. On a state level, services are illustrated in enforcing federal laws, patrolling waterways, and assuring watercraft are operated safely.

The mysteries about the earth’s crust, Dr. Jesse McNinch believed could be solved by studying the landscape beneath the water’s surface. From that determination, a government research project was founded. The United States Army Corp studied natural phenomenon such as coastal erosions patterns and shifting shorelines, emerging in the movement of wind, waves, tides, and currents, through equipment such as CLARIS (Coastal Lidar and Radar Imaging System).

The lionfish has venomous spines. It eats everything. It reproduces at a staggering rate, and it has few known predators. Spotted off the North Carolina Coast in August 2000, it is the first marine invasive fish to have established itself in Atlantic waters. Maurer describes attempts to kill as many lionfish as possible using scuba divers in North Carolina waters.
