Mr. Goerch describes a round-trip ride in 1946 in the cab of the Seaboard Air Line Railroad's diesel engines. The ride on \"The Sun Queen\" left Raleigh bound for Richmond and for the author's return trip \"The Silver Meteor.\" Goerch discusses improvement in rail service because of diesel engines which increase speed with less noise. The author also supplements details of his ride with railroad vernacular, operational procedures, and railroad culture.

Fashion-Flo was a mail order company founded in the small town of Siler City, population approximately 3,000 in 1947. E. A. Resch started the business in October 1944 and ran it from his office at Chatham News, which he published. The main product sold was hosiery with Chadbourn Hosiery Mills, Inc. taking large stock in Fashion-Flo. Distribution of Fashion-Flo's circulars expanded through the mid-1940s and other local Siler City institutions noticed an increase in business.

Ocracoke Island measures seventeen miles long and about a mile wide and in 1947 had a population of 800. Citizens of Silver Lake were dependent on fishing for primary income. 100 fishing boats harvested oysters, shrimp, and various species of fish. The Navy and Coast Guard was the largest establishment, though far less active than during World War II.

Wayne County was formed from Dobbs County in 1779 and was named for General \"Mad Anthony\" Wayne of Revolutionary fame. The county seat lies in Goldsboro and there are also many other interesting places in and interesting facts about Wayne County, such as Saponey Cliffs and the invasion of General Sherman.

The exercises in connection with the formal dedication of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park took place at Newfound Gap, right over the Tennessee-North Carolina state line. As well as the enormous crowds, President and Mrs. Roosevelt were there as were officials and dignitaries from around the country and world.

At one time, Iredell County had the reputation of being the biggest liquor-distilling county in North Carolina. Today, it is a favored section of the State in terms of manufacturing and agriculture. With Statesville as its county seat, Iredell County contains Mitchell College, Carnation Milk Company, Mooresville Cotton Mills, and the Barium Springs Orphanage along with other educational and industrial institutions.

With a history of over two centuries, it is only natural that Wilmington should have many unusual, historic, and odd things of interest. For example, in the St. James Episcopal Church there hangs a famous painting of Christ which was taken from a capture Spanish pirate ship that attempted to seize the town of Brunswick in 1748. Among other things, there is also the Bellamy Mansion, an example of Greek Revival architecture, which was occupied by Union forces during the American Civil War.

Cabarrus County boasts some interesting features and stories, such as \"The Black Boys,\" a band of Cabarrus County men that prevented the shipment of ammunitions to the British government during the Revolutionary War. Cabarrus County is also the location of the first gold mine in the United States and the first organ in a private home in North Carolina.

Old cotton mills, old houses, and interesting historical events combine to make Nash County an attractive section of the State to visit. Cotton mills abound in Rocky Mount, and General Cornwallis made his way through Nash County on the way to Virginia, and there is a homestead in Nash County that is over 200 years old, built in 1735.

Richmond County is one of the oldest counties in the State. It was carved from Anson County in 1779 and has had an interesting history of progress and development. Richmond County is the home of the estate of Flora Macdonald and consequently Flora Macdonald College. It is also the home of the fifth oldest cotton mill, Richmond Manufacturing Company, in the State. Richmond County was also the stage for continual guerilla fighting during the Revolutionary War.
