MINUTES OF MARCH STAFF MEETING
Psychology Department
& March 18, 1968

The Psychology Department held its March meeting in EP 104 at 4 o'clock, March 18,
1968,

PRESENT; Martoccia, Fell, Dixon, Mitchell, Grossnickle, Stapleton, McLain, Rogers,
Steinberg, Long, Cole, Higgins, Williams,

In the absence of Dr. Prewett, Dr. Long chaired the meeting.
Dr. James P, Rogers was elected to represent the Department on the Faculty Senate,

A discussion was held concerning criteria for selecting the outstanding senior in

the Department. A motion was made and passed unanimously that the Department proceed
to elect the outstanding senior for this year and then to re-activate the Committee
that had previously recommended nominees for this award, The following will serve
on the committee; Stapleton, Grossnickle, Williams. They were instructed to set up
the criteria to be used in the future for selecting the outstanding senior, Helen
Cleveland was elected as the outstanding senior for this year.

Dr. Martoccia stated that the students taking the comprehensive examination in the

spring will be taking it under the old requirement--that is they will be examined
in the 4 core areas,

Dr. Rogers made the following suggestions pertaining to the comprehensive examination

? L

All comprehensives be given in the fall and spring quarters only.

After a full discussion it was decided that this would work a
hardship on the students and this suggestion was not adopted.

2. The examination should consist of 2 examinations, each to last
about 4 hours, with the first half to cover the core area and
the second half relating to the individuals' speciality. Each
section to be graded as a whole--not by individual questions.
The examinations are to be given on 2 different days and the
students must pass both halves--receiving either a passing or
failing grade, not a letter grade on each part. Also, it was
felt the core part should be more general in nature.

After a lengthy discussion on this idea it was unanimously adopted.

3. It was suggested that the student be advised that should he fail one
or both halves of the examination he is entitled to one re-test only.
However, should a faculty member feel that extenuating circumstances
exist which he feels warrants the student being given the 2nd re-test
he can recommend such to the entire staff and they will study the case
and make recommendations on the student.

This was agreeable with the staff.

2 Dr. Rogers stated he would write a set of rules, circulate them among the staff
for study and they would be considered at the next staff meeting,

A short report was made on the students admitted to the graduate program,

A discussion was held pertaining to the choice of textbook for Psychology 50,
Motion was made and unanimously passed that the Psychology 50-100 Committee be
reactivated to make a study and recommendations about the whole structure of
Psychology 50, i.e., textbook, topics to be covered, tests, etc.

A discussion was held reviewing the teaching fellowship program,

Miss McLain stated there was no report at this time from the President's Advisory
Council,

Dr. Martoccia suggested that the Committee on Graduate Students' Program be re-
activated. The following were on the old committee: Dr, Long and Dr. Martoccia;
Dr. Mitchell and Dr. Prewett were appointed to replace Dr. Marshall and Dr. Graham.
The Chairman is to be elected by the Committee,

Miss McLain reported for the Committee on General College Curricula Requirements,
The following recommendations were made:

1, That a student must complete both Psychology 50 and 100 before being
accepted as a psychology major.

The thinking behind this recommendation was that the student needed more
than Psychology 50 to determine whether psychology is for him, as he will
have little chance to change his major after moving out of the general
college. And, secondly, to complete the psychology major in two years
after moving out of the general college, the student would need to have
at least 100 completed,

2. That courses in psychology above the 199 level be restricted and not open
to people in the general college. The thinking here was to avoid a
student's continuing in psychology, almost completing the major require-
ments before declaring his major and getting advice from our department.

Item I was unanimously passed,
Item II was defeated by a vote of 10-2.

Dr. Mitchell reported that the Graduate Council recently passed a motion that
departments, in terms of using test scores for admission to the graduate programs,
could use either the GRE or MAT or both. However, he stated that the thinking in
the Psychology Department is that the GRE will continue to be used.

A discussion was held as to whether the Department could require a student to earn
no lower than a grade of '"'C'' in his major rather than that he just have a "C"
average, No action taken on this.

The meeting adjourned at 5:35,
