MINUTES OF NOVEMBER STAFF MEETING
Psychology Department
November 11, 1968

The Psychology Department held its November meeting in EP 103 at 4 o'clock,
November 11, 1968.

PRESENT: Prewett, Higgins, Latham, Kinzie, Rogers, Khatena, Martoccia, Dixon,
Williams, Mitchell, Tacker, Long, Moore, Grossnickle, Stapleton,
Steinberg, Harris.

The minutes of the last meeting were approved.

Dr. Prewett announced that Dean Williams had informed the Department that it
would have $50 this year for promotional literature. He asked for ideas about
how this money could best be used. Those with any. suggestions were ask�d to con-
tact him.

The annual Scholars Weekend was announced for November 15-17. It has been
estimated that approximately 135 students will be on campus during that time
and the faculty was asked to welcome any of these students to their classes.

Dr. Grossnickle, reporting from the President's Advisory Council, made the
following announcements:

1. In reply to the request from the Department that it be brought
up at the Council the feasibility of omitting the swimming re-
quirement for graduation. This request was denied.

2. It was announced that a teaching fellow may drive a State car
but not a graduate student.

3. The President stated that Mr. Wooten was being asked to study
the advisability of teaching fellows being given staff parking
permits.

4, It was announced that telephone facilities will be available
within the next 6 or 8 months whereby the faculty member
wishing to have a telephone installed in his office may do so
at his own expense.

+. The facilities of the gym will be made available on a broader
basis just as soon as the administrative details can be worked
out.

6. Faculty members may have their pictures taken each year or
pick up last year's picture from the News Bureau.

Motion made and unanimously passed that the Psychology Department oppose staff
parking for teaching fellows.

Mr. Dixon moved that faculty members be assigned parking spaces. Motion died
for want of a second.

Mrs. Stapleton moved that those professors desiring an assigned parking space
be permitted to request such a space for specifically designated times. Motion
defeated.








Mrs. Stapleton asked that the proposed salary scale be put on the agenda for
Study at the December staff meeting.

Dr. Martoccia, reporting for the Comprehensive Committee, announced that the
Committee had voted to have the names of the students taking the examination
deleted rather than have the examinations typed. He asked what the wishes of
the Department are for the future. Motion made and unanimously passed that
this policy be adopted for all future examinations.

Dr. Mitchell, Chairman of the Departmental Curriculum Committee, made the
following report:

1. Motion made that a graduate course in non-parametric statistics
be added to the curriculum for 3 credit hours. This course to
follow Siegel. Motion passed unanimously.

2. Motion made that a 300 level supervised research course be added
for 3 hours credit for each time it is taken, with a maximum of
2 hours permitted. This number to be 396abc. Motion passed
unanimously.

3. Motion made that a course in Fundamentals of Behavioral Research
for 5 quarter hours be added at the 300 level. This course to
cover experimental design and statistics; content to be determined
at a later date. Motion seconded. After a lengthy discussion
motion made that the motion be tabled until a decision could be
made about the prerequisites for the course. This motion carried
8 to 6. Dr. Grossnickle called for a re-vote due to a misunder-
standing of the question. Motion failed 6 to 8 on the re-vote.
Dr. Mitchell amended the original motion to adopt the course, the
amendment to state: 'The principle of this course be approved with
the understanding that a syllabus for it be drawn and presented to
the staff for approval.'' Motion passed 12 to 3.

The following suggestions were made regarding Psychology 101 and 210:

1. Leave 101 and 210 as is.

2. a. Change 210 to a 3-hour laboratory course.
b. Leave 101 as is but change number to 200 level.
c. For majors make 210 a prerequisite for 101.
d. Make 210 a prerequisite for 225 and 290.
=: Add a 200 level, 3~hour research technique course (laboratory).

Add a 200 level, 3 or 5 hour research technique course,
primarily descriptive statistics.

Add a 300 level intermediate statistics course.

Add a 300 level, 3 hour experimental course which would be
restricted to seniors and permission of instructor.

Motion made that Item #1 be adopted. Motion seconded. Vote: For 8 opposed 7.
Motion carried. Since Items 2 and 3 were based on changing 101 and 210, the
faculty agreed that there was no need to consicer these items.








Dr. Mitchell moved that either the Curriculum Committee or an appointed
& committee study and make recommendations to the faculty on the content of 101
and 210. Motion seconded and unanimously passed.

Dr. Martoccia asked for clarification on who should direct the student's paper
in Psychology 315-318. It was stated that the feeling is that an advisor

who puts his advisee in the course should be the one to direct the reading,

as he probably had an idea as to what kind of book would fit into the student's
program and interests.

The meeting adjourned at 5:45.
