MINUTES OF MAY STAFF MEETING
Psychology Department
May 6, 1968
The Psychology Department held its May meeting in EP 104 at 4 o'clock, May 6, 1968.
PRESENT: Prewett, Higgins, Martoccia, Kinzie, Rogers, Steinberg, Dixon, Mitchell,
Long, McLain, Williams, Grossnickle, Fell, Stapleton.
Dr. Long, Chairman of the Graduate Admissions Committee, announced that 10
students have been admitted to the general-theoretical program and 17 to the
clinical program. A list is attached showing the school they came from and the
student's GRE scores.
Dr. Martoccia reporting for the Library Committee stated that Miss Brantley, a
student helper who has been assigned to the Library Committee for the past 2
years, is not graduating as stated previously but is going to be away on an
internship and he asked that a replacement for her be secured. He also said that
it was not necessary to hold back orders for books simply because the budget had
been expended as the library is behind in their orders and it would be sometime
before the order could be processed.
Reporting for the Comprehensive Committee, Dr. Martoccia announced that the
examination would be given May 11 and at that time those who failed it the last
time should re-take it on this date, as well as some students taking it for the
first time.
Dr. Long announced that none of the new clinical students planned to take it at
this time. It was pointed out that the University's only requirement about time
the examination should be taken is that a certain number of hours must have been
passed before a student can take the comprehensive, with nothing being said of
how long a student may delay taking it.
Dr. Rogers reported on some proposed changes for the graduate handbook. After
a lengthy discussion Dr. Long moved that the Comprehensive Committee have another
meeting to re-study the problem and the faculty be advised as to when and where
the meeting would be held and invited to attend. At this meeting the problem
would be thoroughly studied and a recommendation brought back to the staff,
Motion seconded and unanimously passed.
Miss McLain suggested that the entire Graduate handbook should be re-done,
Dr. Grossnickle, Chairman of the Psychology 50/100 Committee, announced that a
new textbook has been recommended for Psychology 50--Kagan and Havemann's
Psychology and that this text be adopted beginning with the fall quarter. Motion
made, seconded and unanimously passed that this report be accepted,
Dr. Prewett read a letter from William Schlenger, a graduate student, requesting
that he be permitted to take Psychology 311G (Sensation and Perception) and
Psychology 426 (Motivation) by examination. A motion was made and seconded that
the Committee on Graduate Students' Programs be re-activated to take action on
Mr. Schlenger's case. Miss McLain moved that the Committee's recommendations be
accepted as final only in Mr. Schlenger's case. Motion unanimously passed as
amended by Miss McLain,
Dr. Grossnickle made the following report from the Faculty Senate:
1. Is this Department in favor of having the semester system
re-studied (not are we in favor of a semester system but
simply in favor of having it studied)? Yes
2. Does anyone from this Department want to serve on the
committee to study the problem? Yes
Ce. Rea Pixon
3. Should the committee be appointed to investigate the exemption
from finals for a student having a high grade? Yes
Dy. Prewett asked that the staff please return the faculty research cards either
to the Departmental Office or directly to The Graduate School.

Harris, and Dr. Boice Daugherty had signed contracts and would be joining the
faculty in the fall.

that might be interested in joining the faculty at East Carolina to please
inform him.

to join the faculty at Clemson and Mr. Graham Burkheimer would be leaving to
begin his doctoral program the at The Univérsity of Nerth Carolina at .Chapel Hill.
