MINUTES OF DECEMBER STAFF MEETING
Psychology Department
December 4, 1967
The Psychology Department held its December meeting in EP 104 at 4 o'clock,
December 4, 1967.
PRESENT: Prewett, Marshall, Kinzie, Cole, Rogers, Higgins, Steinberg, Dixon,
Burkheimer, Stapleton, McLain, Williams, Long, Mitchell, Grossnickle,
Martoccia
Mrs. Virginia Green from the Personnel Office was introduced. Mrs. Green pro-
ceeded to notarize, the death benefit forms for the staff,
Dr. Prewett announced that Dean Howell had informed him that the Department could
have another teaching fellow for the winter quarter and asked the members of the
Department to make recommendations to the office for this position.
Dr. Prewett outlined some of the activities of the North Carolina State Board of
Examiners of Practicing Psychologists,
Dr, Prewett announced that the Richardson Foundation had granted East Carolina
University $67,000 to work with a leadership identification project. Dr. Conley
of the School of Business has been appointed the coordinator of this Project.
There will be 10 freshman on campus known as the Richardson Fellows, faculty who
work with this Project will be granted half-time teaching responsibilities. He
asked anyone interested in this Project to contact him. After a full discussion
it was decided that Dr. Prewett should explore with Dr, Jenkins ways that the
Department could assist in this Project,
Dr. Prewett announced that East Carolina University has been given some land in
Dare County and that there are sleeping facilities for 500 people. The only
plans now are for a music camp and possibly a history camp. He asked for any
suggestions for the utilization of this property.
ft was announced that the Developmental Evaluation Clinic has received funds to
start on their new building,
Mr. George Esser of the North Carolina Fund had been extended an invitation to
speak at the next meeting of Psi Chi but due to previous commitments he was
unable to attend. Mr. William Flowers will be the speaker.
The following resolution was passed:
The Psychology Department wishes to express concern over course
proliferation in such numbers that a meaningful debate is im-~
possible at appropriate committee meetings.
Miss McLain suggested that perhaps double-numbering would take care of many of the
problems arising from a student needing credit for so many hours in a particular
field. A full discussion followed and it was unanimously agreed that perhaps
this would help.
Dr. Mitchell reminded the Department of the Dutch luncheon meeting with the
graduate students in the Buccaneer Room, December 13 at 12 o'clock.
Dr� Grossnickle announced that Psi Chi would meet December 14 at 7 p. m,.
It was announced that Christmas holidays would begin December 15.
Dr. Prewett asked Mr, Burkheimer if he would continue his work with the graduate
students on computer familiarization.
The faculty expressed regret at the death of Karen Martin and asked that a letter
of sympathy be sent to her parents.
Dre Long announced that the Scheduling Committee would meet Wednesday, December 6
at 4 o'clock in EP 112 and asked if anyone would like to change their teaching
preferences to please let their wishes be known immediately.
Dre Martoccia announced that the North Carolina Psychological Association meeting
was December 8-9 at Southern Pines. Dr. Prewett asked Dr. Martoccia to take
charge of contacting members of the Department and arranging travel for those
wishing to attend,
The secretary informed the faculty of the new DR I and II forms and asked their
cooperation in filling them out correctly,
Dr. Marshall asked if there were any special cases that the Scheduling Committee
should know about before the schedule was finalized--such as special hours
courses need to be taught. Any such requests should be turned in immediately.
Mr, Dixon expressed concern over how many and how late in the quarter students
drop courses. Dr. Marshall was instructed to bring this matter before the
Credits Committee,
Dr. Martoccia announced that the Library Committee had spent all the funds
allotted to the Department and any further book orders would have to be put
on back order.
The meeting adjourned at 5:15.
