Shelby, the county seat of Cleveland County, is OUR STATE magazine's featured Tar Heel town of the month. The town incorporated in 1843 and was named for Colonel Isaac Shelby, a Revolutionary War soldier. The town's current population is 20,000, and in 1980, it became one of the first places to be designated a national and North Carolina Main Street Community. The town supports historic preservation. Among the structures in the historic district are a 1919 Herschell-Spillman carousel, the 1907 Cleveland County Courthouse, the 1924 Masonic Temple, and the 1916 U.S. Post Office. Other attractions include the Shelby City Park, The Cleveland County Fair, and the Rogers Theatre.

Among the things not to miss while visiting are the Owl's Eye Vineyard and Winery, Buffalo Creek Gallery, the Carousel and Rotary Train at City Park, NiFen Dining, and the Lily Bean Coffee Shop.

Shelby, located in Cleveland County, is home to country musicians Don Gibson and Earl Scruggs. Recently, museums were opened in the two’s honor thanks to a project called Destination Cleveland County. The project was successful, and the two museums give Shelby some tourism.

The building reopened and named after one of the town’s native sons has functioned as a theater once before, from 1939-2006. Because of this, the present Don Gibson Theater and former State Theater still serves as a memory making site for Shelby citizens, into the third generation.
