Abstract:
Duke University and Hospital are being sued by Betty Eldreth. Eldreth received unnecessary radiation and surgery based on results from an experimental procedure that was performed without her consent. The results indicated Eldreth had cancer, but she was found to not have cancer after the surgery and radiation were complete. Evidence suggests that the experimental procedure was used improperly and this was known some at Duke who failed to stop the practice. This has caused the U.S. House of Representatives Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations to look into allegations of fraud and conflict of interest in use of the test.

Duke University Chapel’s carillon, a set of 50 bells, has been in use for over 80 years. They have a rather interesting history, and were in fact received as a gift in 1930, a bit after the bell tower was built. The bells are now a cherished part of the university, and shall be for many years to come.

After thinking about having a new art museum for years, Duke University will build one. Duke alumnus Raymond Nasher will give $7.5 million of the $15 million cost. The 50,000-square-foot-building will bear his name. the scheduled opening is 2002.

Duke University’s “From the Archives” series pairs musicians and composers with archival materials stored in Duke’s Rubenstein Manuscript and Rare Book Library. Over the past year, North Carolina band Hiss Golden Messenger, has created an album to bring to life the images found in William Gedney’s photograph collection. The collection inspired a new stage show in addition to the new album, both entitled Heart Like a Levee.

April was known for two Durham County anniversaries, one being the 116th anniversary of General Joseph Johnston’s surrender to General William Sherman. The latter event appears to have generated only loss, but the author proved otherwise. Noted was Union soldiers camping near Bennett Place planted a seed of demand for its bright leaf tobacco. Wealth generated from the demand yielded the relocation of Trinity College to Durham. From an endowment by James B. Duke came the transformation of Trinity College into Duke University.

Wearing apparel displaying college logos is often produced in third-world sweatshops. A Duke-logo baseball cap costs $20, and the university receives $1.50 through licensing. However, production costs only about eight cents in workers' wages. In 1997, some Duke students organized Students Against sweatshops to protest for better working conditions in factories that produce Duke-logo licensed material.
