After graduating from ECU in 1974, Leroy Bland, a Robersonville native, began his career by starting a marching band for Creswell high School. In 1988, he became band director for Plymouth High School and built a successful program there for 22 years. In 1997, he lost nine band members and one former member in a tragic highway accident just two miles out of town. He retired n 2003.

At 76, Barney Conway is Director of Martin County Tourism Development Authority. A Williamston are native, Conway moved to Atlanta in 1971and worked with WGST Radio where their nighttime program became number one mainstay in the Atlanta area.

Located 10 miles east of Williamston in Williams Township in Martin County, the W.W. Griffin farm house and surrounding farm buildings evoke the character and setting of late 19th and early 20 century farm living in Martin County and eastern North Carolina as a whole. The 6.8 acre complex, which is part of a larger 1200 acre farm was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001. the house is a classic example of the once popular l-housee in eastern North Carolina. Griffin was the first person in the county to grow sweet potatoes on a commercial scale and was a "champion timberman" owing to his extensive business selling timber rights to various lumber companies.

A Washington theatre called “crown jewel of Eastern North Carolina” has expanded its vaudeville roots, assuring its continued bright reputation across the region. Established in 1913, Turnage Theatre has become a local venue for youth arts, movie events, comedy, summer art camps, and workshops. It's also a performing home for East Carolina University’s school music opera program.

Plymouth, North Carolina was founded from properties once part of a plantation owned by Arthur Rhodes called Brick House. In 1807, it became the first incorporated in town in the then newly formed Washington County. Today, the town's largest industry is Domtar Paper Company, LLC.

Area planter Arthur Rhodes Founded what was to become Plymouth in 1787. It was the first incorporated town in the newly formed Washington County in 1807. The town saw significant military activity during the Civil War. Weyerhaeuser added greatly to the local economy in 1937. Selling a portion of this business in 2007 to Domtar led to an unfortunate 33 percent reduction in the workforce. Town historian Tom Harrison notes current rebranding efforts

Bishop Jerry McCrary was licensed and ordained as an Elder on Oct. 11, 1975 at the Annual Conference of the Northeast "B" Division of the UAFWB Denomination, making him the youngest Elder in the history of that denomination. in 1991, McCrary a native and resident of Parmele founded The Youth Conference Inc., designed to assist youth in artistic, academic, social and spiritual development.
