Title: Willie Cartagena oral history interview, 2011
Identifier: OH0265   (https://digital.lib.ecu.edu/16155)
Description: Audio recording and text transcription of a Latino oral history in English, done for an event held at Joyner Library on April 10, 2011. Mr. Cartagena was born in Puerto Rico and served in the U.S. Army from 1970-2000. After his retirement, he settled in Wayne County, N.C. and worked in human resources in a chicken processing plant. He worked with local leader Gaspar Gonzales to build a Latino community center. The center assists the Latino community, for instance with information and translation services, encouragement of entrepreneurship, and the community as a whole with school supplies for children, food assistance, and health services. He describes his theories of leadership, and partnerships he has formed with other groups in the area, including ECU. The interview forms part of the Latino Oral History Archive, and was conducted by Drs. Ricardo Contreras (Anthropology, ECU) and David Griffith (Anthropology and Coastal Science and Policy, ECU) with funding from the North Carolina Humanities Council.
