Description: Captain Spore, who was born in Annapolis, Maryland, was the product of a long line of Naval officers. He comments on his ancestry, childhood, and experiences at the U.S. Naval Academy. He describes duty on the USS FLUSSER during and after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, including escort duty between Pearl Harbor and the West Coast. He comments on his assignment to the USS SPENCE, convoy duty to Casa Blanca, South Pacific duty with Admiral Burke's squadron, including Espiritu Santa and the "Turkey Shoot" at Guadalcanal. He also comments on duty on the USS DUNCAN at Okinawa; air patrol duty between Okinawa and Honshu, Japan; assignment to the USS RALPH TALBOT; and involvement in the Bikini Island atomic tests after the war's end.
