What made the daunting task of restoring this former plantation house worthwhile: restoring also the only example in the county of transitional architecture between the Georgian and Federalist styles. What also made the task worthwhile was unexpected fruit of their labor: helping a local add a branch to her family tree, by the discovery of an ancestor born there.

This article is accompaniment to Morgan Banville’s “A Collection of Giving.” It focuses on Michael Forster’s collection of over 30,000 postcards, started by ones his father gave to him. It includes Rep. Walter B. Jones Jr.’s role in 2,000 postcards donated to a U.S. Government project about the Statue of Liberty.

One source of Michael Forster’s reputation is postcards, currently over 30,000, which does not includes ones he donated to a U.S. government project. The other is trains, which does not include the 1,000 plus repaired trains he has given away as Christmas gifts to local charities.
