Abstract:
Last fall, a two-year old North Carolina boy died from accidentally eating seed peanuts, which are treated with a very toxic organic phosphate insecticide called Thimet. According to Dr. Shirley Osterhout of the Duke Poison Control Center, more than half of the state’s poisoning cases involved children under four years of age. This article discusses recent cases handled at the center, sources of poison and hazardous waste, and prevention of poisonings.

Since 1967, the North Carolina Blueberry Industry has been sponsoring a blueberry festival the third week in May in the Elizabethtown-White Lake area. The Seventh Annual Blueberry Festival, ranked second in size for festivals in North Carolina, will be held May 15-20. This article discusses the state’s blueberry industry, and the events offered at the festival.

Last July, a group of relic collectors were caught stealing three cannons from Fort Branch, a Civil War fort on the Roanoke River near Hamilton. The incident led to the installation of a new security light and considerable interest in the old fort and cannons. This article discusses restoration efforts at the fort, and local citizens’ opinions on security measures.
