An early account of wild western North Carolina before the 19th century was captured by Pennsylvania native John Brown. He traveled through an area now known as Salisbury, Statesville, Wilkesboro, Morganton, and Asheville for six months in 1795 looking to purchase land in the region. During his travels he commented on social and economic conditions, as well as the general topography of the area in a journal which is reprinted here.

Abstract:
This article is a reprint of journal entries written by postmaster surveyor Ebenezer Hazard while on orders to regulate the Continental postal route between Philadelphia and Savannah. Published as a two volume manuscript entitled \"The Journal of Ebenezer Hazard,\" the excerpts included here were written during a preliminary trip to Edenton and back between May 15 and July 8, 1777 and a complete round trip to Savannah between October 8, 1777 and March 5, 1778.

The image of county histories is assessed through the examination of county history book reviews published in the Journal of American History and the Journal of Southern History. These single volume county histories are rarely satisfactory when reviewed by the professional historian.

Famous Boston zoologist William Brewster visited the North Carolina highlands around Asheville for two weeks in 1885 to search for lost bird species and for evidence of which northern birds might nest in the southern mountains. During his expedition, Brewster proved that over 20 northern species nested in the southern Appalachian Mountains during nesting season based primarily on the presence of certain trees and forest types.

This is the first installment of a reprint of the journal of young journalist Ruffin Wirt Tomlinson written during his senior year at the university, and two years before his death. What little is known about Tomlinson's life is found in his journal pages, although some additional biographical information culled from land and university records is included in the introduction. The journal is one of the only accounts of the university during this period that survives.
