Preliminary reports of 1980 North Carolina population and housing show the total population in the state to be fifteen-percent higher than in 1970. As compared to other states, North Carolina has become the tenth most populous state during the past decade. This article discusses these population statistics, growth in the number of housing units and city expenditures.

The state-owned Wanchese Seafood Industrial Park was recently created with concrete dockage, offices and a waste treatment plant. The park expects to attract million-dollar commercial seafood processing firms and related interests. Channel construction and stabilization of Oregon Inlet were key in the planning of the park.

The University of North Carolina Sea Grant Program has made substantial contributions to the state’s coastal resources, marine education, research, and economy. Sea Grant has also worked with commercial fishermen, helping them to develop new and improved technology for handling nets, crab pots and other fishing gear. In return, there have been increases in fish harvests and profits.
