North Carolina is known for its pioneering efforts in building railroads, seaports, and airlines. Between 1800 and 1837, North Carolina sponsored and owned the longest span of railroad in the world; this developed into the statewide system known today, with larger systems extending into other regions of the United States for both passenger and freight transport. Additionally, the state's ports are handling the ever-increasing import and export tonnage of industrial products along the eastern seaboard. Further, air transport in North Carolina is now fed by six lines, with large centers in several regions of the state.

A new travel pattern has been constructed in the heavily forested mountains west of Asheville, North Carolina. New and newly improved loop routes are linking famous attractions such as the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Nantahala and Cullasaja Gorges, Nantahal and Pisgah National Forests, Fontana Lake, and Cherokee Indian country.

The International Resistance Company is one of the fastest growing and world's largest manufacturers of resistors. With rapid expansion in producing electrical circuits, the company built a plant in the later half of 1952 in Asheville, North Carolina. The company, with another plant in Boone, has over 360 employees of which, at its own expense, it provides full coverage insurance and health care.

In the northwest corner of North Carolina, new horizons are taking place in the rapidly expanding field of electronics. In the Blue Ridge country, a modern branch plant of the Sprague Electric Company, the world's largest manufacturer of capacitors, is setting a record for growth. The Ashe County plant will eventually employ 250 persons in the manufacture of dry electrolytic capacitors.

The Pyramid Electric Company, one of America's fastest growing electric plants, is now located in Gastonia, North Carolina thanks to a newspaper advertisement in a New York paper by the Gastonia Industrial Diversification Commission. Pyramid manufactures electronic capacitors for a wide variety of electrical and electronic equipment, also providing filters and suppressors to companies such as RCA, General Electric, Westinghouse, Sylvania, Magnavox, and other big electronic names.

National Carbon Co., one of the oldest divisions of Union Carbide and Carbon Corporation and leading manufacturer of carbon products, ferro-alloys and metals, gasses and organo-silicon chemicals, synthetic chemicals, and plastics, has three battery plants in Charlotte, Asheboro, and Greenville. The three plants employ over 900 employees and produce a variety of battery types.

Amendments made to Employment Security Laws by the last session of the North Carolina General Assembly, require compliance with new federal regulations that all employers of four or more people will have to begin paying unemployment insurance taxes. The previous stipulation was for eight employees. This will bring over 10,350 more employers and about 60,000 employees under the coverage of benefit payments when unemployed through no fault of their own.

In recent years, competition among states and local communities to attract new industry to their areas has increased and taken on new major methods. Aiding businesses in locating to their areas, states and local entities use property tax exemptions, industrial bond issues, and quasi-public development corporations. However, some businesses, like General Electric which operates out of North Carolina, look for business climate, competitive costs and community loyalty rather than tax favors.

A new industrial endeavor for North Carolina is the manufacture and distribution of North Carolina-made charcoal. Experimentation has begun using low-grade hardwoods which has little or now market value and clutters up sections of the state's 18 million acres of woodlands. So far two firms, in Mount Airy and Chapel Hill, are making charcoal from oak and hickory, and selling products in North Carolina storefronts, reportedly bringing down the cost of charcoal products sold in the state from other markets.

But in less than two decades, the South has staged a remarkable economic recovery, with fundamental adjustments to create a solid foundation, which has led to growth in industry and agriculture. Mechanization, growth in capital investments and rural development have all lent a hand to this reverse in economic development.
