Charles Thrasher moved from California to Chocowinity and has since taken an avid interest in photographing the beauty of local swamps. Focus of this sketch is a wetland near Cherry Run Road outside of Washington. All photos are taken from his fiberglass kayak. He hopes to change people's negative perceptions of swamps. His work is currently documented in a Facebook group he created last year titled Beaufort County NC Photography.

Nick Botello-Hernandez has been the Park Ranger for Goose Creek State Park in Beaufort County for five years now. This year marks the 50th year of operation for the park. Kids have the opportunity to join in for assisting activities in the park by joining the Junior Ranger Program. The program allows kid to participate in community service events that promote continued maintenance for natural ecosystems and cultural features in the park.

Smoke on the Water BBQ and Chili Festival in Washington celebrates its 25th anniversary this October. Pam Anderson started the festival in 1998 as a way to help area charities raise money. Since the festival began more than $300,000 has poured back into those charities. An estimated 30,000 people visit Washington each year to attend the event.

In 2023, the North Carolina General Assembly appropriated $6.5 million to begin renovations on the 15,00 square foot building. This is in addition to $7 million already poured into the building for stabilization projects. Upon completion of the project, expected to take four years, are to have the Hyde County Extension offices relocate in the facility. Lewis Forest of Greenville served as historical curator for the project. the building has been vacant for the past 25 years.

Blake Haddock is founder and owner of Feather Point Retrievers in Greenville. Located on a 100 acre farm off Highway 264, the facility specializes in breeding American Labradors as well as training dogs to retrieve during a waterfowl hunt. Haddock's method involves training dogs alongside their owners, the ultimate reward in this for the owner is having both a retriever and companion in one dog.

Goose Creek joined the NC State Parks system in September 1974. Early on, it was recognized that the park's few remaining longleaf pines needed protection. The park's first superintendent, Lauris Joyner was one of the first employees in the system to be trained in the method of prescribed burns, critical for the survival of longleaf pines.

Nathan Van Nortwick is owner of the oyster farm, Belhaven Oyster Company. As his company's only employee, he plants, harvests, sells and delivers them to local restaurants. He began in 2020 with 50,000 oyster seeds. Van Nortwick got his lease to farm two acres in the Pungo River in 2018.

"For one Beaufort County group, beekeeping is essential and exciting." Matt Hooker of Washington is a member of the Beaufort County Beekeepers Association. He is a full-time beekeeper, overseeing as estimated 40 hives across Beaufort County. His hives can produce hundreds of pounds of honey annually. The Association partners with Beaufort county community College to offer a three-week course in February on how to start bee-keeping.
