The series is a collaboration between UNC-TV, the Southern Documentary Fund, and South Carolina Educational Television and includes documentaries about the American South, not just North Carolina.

Kasib Abdullah founded Believers United for Progress (BUFP), an organization that provides meals for 300 kids in afterschool programs, in 2005. BUFP encourages positive behavior by recruiting at-risk kids to volunteer, therefore ensuring the organization reaches even more people in an effort to restore Durham’s Hayti district.

In May 2011, the Inter-Faith Council (IFC) for Social Service in Chapel Hill proposed moving their existing men’s homeless shelter to a different neighborhood. However, residents protested the move, and as a result, men who need the IFC Community House’s services must be picked up at the old shelter. The small amount of space available for emergency drop-ins also presents problems for the shelter, especially with the cooler temperatures in early 2016.

The North Carolina HIP (Historically Informed Practice) Music Festival features music from the sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth centuries, all played in their original forms. Often, musicians involved in this festival use antiquated instruments or older versions of modern instruments and play the instruments with techniques more common in those centuries.

Learning Together is a preschool in Raleigh that incorporates a basic formula of nine special-needs kids, ages 3-5, in a classroom with nine others of similar ages. The program has been active since 1975, but continues to face funding challenges. In 2015, Enloe High School’s Student Council raised $118,000 for Learning Together, providing a much-needed service of monetary assistance as well as volunteer time.

Former inmates of the Durham County jail and activists are vigorously protesting what they call horrid conditions in the jail. Lack of medical service, little time out of cells, and poor nutrition are a few of the concerns these protesters have, and they are now calling for investigations and monthly revenue reports from the jail.

The Durham Police Department is drafting a body-cam policy for the police force. However, the most recent draft is problematic, for it does not make the footage available to the public. The draft classifies all body-cam footage as being a part of a criminal investigation, essentially giving the police chief the right to determine what is released to the public. Many Durham citizens are challenging this drafted policy and hope for more access to body-cam footage.
