The Art of Cool Festival and Moogfest have spent the past two years locked in comparison and competition for Durham resources. The festivals take place less than a month apart, but they attract different audiences and reflect different values. Themes of protest and resistance were central to both festivals this year, and their different manifestations were telling of their motivations.

University of North Carolina graduates are making their mark on pop culture. Joseph Headen coined the word “bruh” and has used its popularity to build a business around the word. Chris Kelly has created shows and content for Carton Network’s Adult Swim. Headen and Kelly have both had their content transformed into viral memes and viewed by millions of people. Their inspirations and success stories are shared along with other area residents who have worked on popular tv shows.

George Clinton, North Carolina native and legend of P-Funk music, is a headliner at the Art of Cool Festival in Durham this weekend. Clinton has been a uniting figure for generations, with his music empowering African Americans to fight for social and racial equality. Most of the performers at this year’s festival were strongly influenced by Clinton’s music.

Samir Saleh fled civil war in Lebanon and established himself as a leader in Raleigh’s Arab-American community. Saleh opened the restaurant Neomonde, where he planted a pomegranate tree brought from Lebanon. The pomegranate is venerated as a jewel of prosperity in various cultures of the Middle East and Mediterranean.

Wake County residents recently elected seven Democrats to the Wake County commissioner’s board. At their first meeting, the all Democratic board shared their vision for the future which includes improvements in education, public transportation, and economic development. Perhaps their greatest challenge will be with education funding as growth in the county has caused a lack of schools and the need for increased teacher pay to retain teachers.

This weekend's Festival on the Hill, which occurs at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, explores the interactions between music and science. Launched in 2002 by the Department of Music, this biennial festival fosters discussion between scholars, composers, and performers. This year’s theme is Music, Science, & Nature, which stems from the work of UNC composition professor Lee Weisert.
