Called by some the world's greatest dance festival, the American Dance Festival performs for seven straight weeks in June and July at Duke University. Here the world's leading modern dance companies come to introduce new works and showcase older modern works. Some festival performances have grown too large for Page Auditorium at Duke, and a new and larger venue is being sought.

The American Dance Festival, held every summer at Duke University, presented seven weeks and three days of modern dance during the 2005 festival. Twenty-two main-stage performances included nine world premieres and two first-time showings in the United States. Woods discusses the performances, dancers, and choreographers.

Abstract:
The American Dance Festival had been held at Connecticut College until 1978 when it was moved to Duke University's Page Auditorium. The festival includes six weeks of public performances, but also hosts workshops and a school. Dancers of college and post-college age will see if they can become a part of the professional dance environment. This year's festival will be held between June 17 and July 28.
