In Scotland County, overused and abandoned underground gas tanks have been leaking gasoline into the groundwater. Officials found that wells serving 60 families – nearly every household in the county -- were tainted with unsafe levels of ethylene dibromide.

When the 22-mile stretch from Research Triangle Park to Orange County is complete it will have cost more than $103 million, more than $10 million of which is state funds. The freeway’s impact will be far reaching. Residents will be able to commute to anywhere in the Triangle in a half hour or less, thousands of acres of farmland will be available for development, and growth along the interstate will enrich the tax coffers of the local government.

As safety violations are uncovered at a nuclear fuel plan in Wilmington, the key complainant experiences intimidation and retaliation for making claims against G.E. As a result of an external investigation by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the company has been cited for needlessly risking the health, not only of the 1,700 G.E. processing-plant employees, but also the 100,000 residents living in and around southeastern North Carolina’s largest city.

According to North Carolinians Against Racist and Religious Violence, since 1982 there have been at least 25 acts of racial intimidation reported in Iredell County. It is not clear why there is so much racist activity in this rural western county, or if it is any different than what may be occurring more quietly in other parts of North Carolina.
