Progress Energy and Duke Energy are proposed to merge. Progress Energy has a nuclear plant at its Shearon Harris site in Wake County and is considering building more reactors there. Duke Energy, meanwhile, is in preconstruction of a nuclear plant in South Carolina which would supply power to both states. The company is seeking permission to invest more money. If the plant gets built, total cost would be $11 billion. Consumers express concerns about rate increases from this proposed construction.

In the 1960s, President Johnson declared war on poverty in the country. In North Carolina the poverty level has dropped from a high of 40 percent in the late 1950s to slightly over 16 percent in 2009. However, the same facts show different truths about what it is to be poor in the state.

Samuel Dillard opened his grocery store and restaurant in Durham in 1953. It closed on March 18, 2011 due to the uncertain economy in the state and country. Wallace reflects on the restaurant's fifty years. Dillard's barbecue featured a mustard-based sauce, which was different from the eastern vinegar and the western tomato.

In this second in a series of three stories on environmental justice issues in North Carolina, Cowell examines the old Chatham County landfill, built in 1973 and closed by federal regulators in 1993, and its effects on the Alston Road community. The dump has leaked cancer-causing contaminants into residents' drinking water wells and at times has exceeded the limits for explosive methane gas.

When African-American residents in Chatham and Lee Counties encountered difficulty in securing credit and other financial services, Bishop Leach and several others founded the Chatham-Lee Credit Union. Leach managed it from a backyard building for forty years. When he died in 1997, he son, Jimmy Leach, took over the day-to-day operations. The credit union, now with $2.81 million in assets, was awarded an INDEPENDENT 1998 Citizen Award.

N.C. Central University law school students and alumni opposed a proposal for a constitutional law center project. Their complaints stemmed from the project's backing coming from Republican affiliated Art Pope. Bob Orr, former state Supreme Court associate justice and the man appointed to start the project, rescinded the offer last week because of general disapproval among students.
