When Ruth Little undertook a two-year study of grave markers, her travels took her across the state and into 550 graveyards in thirty-four counties. The result was STICKS AND STONES, which contains her documentation and description along with pictures by Charlotte photographer Tim Buchman.

In 1997, five Mecklenburg County commissioners, so incensed that the Charlotte Repertory Company was presenting plays with gay themes, completely cut out the commission's annual $2.5 million contribution to the local Arts and Science Council. In a recent election voters replaced four of the five with art supporters.

Bert Carpenter taught art history to generations of students. He was also a well-known painter and for twenty-five years served as director of the Weatherspoon Art Gallery at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. During that period he put together an outstanding collection of modern art. In March, 1999, the Gallery honored him with a sixty-five year retrospective.

The Ohio-based labor union, Farm Labor Organizing Committee, seeks to organize a farm worker union in the state. Their target is the Mt., Olive Pickle Company, the largest pickle company in the South. The union seeks collective bargaining, higher wages, and better living conditions for workers. Unless the company agrees to talks by March 17, 1999, the union will begin a regional boycott of Mt. Olive products.

After thinking about having a new art museum for years, Duke University will build one. Duke alumnus Raymond Nasher will give $7.5 million of the $15 million cost. The 50,000-square-foot-building will bear his name. the scheduled opening is 2002.

There are around 12,600 HIV cases in the state. The AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP) combines federal and state moneys to help pay drug therapy for those lacking insurance or who do not qualify for Medicaid. Currently, around 2,200 patients are served. A concern of the recipients is that legislative funding can be reduced as well as increased.

When a legislative committee approved a bill in 1997 that would allow Blue Cross and Blue Shield to keep over $1 billion in tax breaks when they converted to a for-profit company, the Coalition for Public Trust was organized. So successful was the coalition's opposition that the company abandoned its decision. The INDEPENDENT awarded the coalition a 1998 Citizens Award for their work.

In 1995, when three residents in the Old West Durham neighborhood began racially intimidating some others, over 50 citizens organized the Old West Durham Neighborhood Association to deal with it. The three are now gone, and the association takes pride in its achievement of diversity, harmony, and community. The INDEPENDENT awarded the group a 1998 Citizen Award.
