The small town, population 4,000, also celebrates its rich history in a historic house turned bed and breakfast and a museum commemorating the work of Christopher Bechtler, credited as minting the first gold $1 coin in the region.

According to town historian Robin Lattimore, Rutherfordton's Man Street has been around since 1790. Half a century after the Revolution, Christopher Bechtler came to Rutherfordton and opened what became the most significant private mint i the nation's history. A list of specific attractions in the town is noted by the author.
