Rutherfordton is OUR STATE magazine's featured Tar Heel town of the month. The county seat of Rutherford County, the town at one time had the only private mint ever operated in the Southeast. In 1887, the railroad's coming brought business and tourism. Today the town seeks to revitalize its historic downtown district.

In 2010, Rutherfordton is celebrating its 225th anniversary. It is a place of history. Christopher Bechtler minted the country's first $1 gold coin in 1831, and the town boasts the largest collection of antebellum architecture in their part of the state. Larkin describes some things to see and do in the town.

Hardscrabble Hollow Farm in Rutherford County is the home of the McDermott family. Having left behind the city life for their new country farm, they raise chickens, goats, bees, and crops to sustain their lives during retirement. They blog about their experiences on the farm and sell their excess harvest to the community.
