The Maola Milk & Ice Cream Company opened the Cow Cafe in New Bern in 1994, right across the street from its plant. Decorated in black and white, the cafe has attracted a local following and is a favorite of hundreds of vacationers from out-of-state.

The “home away from home” nuance came from the sense of welcome offered for all, across the racial divide and through times of economic boom and bust.

Michelle Lynn is owner of a more than 40-year old comfort food establishment in New Bern known as The Country Biscuit. After working eight years as assistant director of the New Bern Riverfront Convention and Visitor Center, she opened her business in 2018.
