Visitors to historic Halifax, founded in Halifax County in 1760 and site of the Halifax Resolves signing, find quiet, informative tours with no lines or fees. Currently seven restored historic structures sit on the 40-acre town historic site.

Abstract:

Founded in 1760, Halifax was once a business, social, and political center. It is also the place where the first formal statement for independence was made on April 12, 1776. Today, the town of 400 attracts visitors with its restored historic site.

Abstract:

In 1974, archaeological digs began at Halifax which included professionals and students from Meredith College. The goal of excavation was to locate and examine a large unidentified building on a 1769 city map. Preliminary digs determined the location on the map to be correct and determined it was a household complete with tableware fragments and a large hearth used for cooking.

Abstract:

Withstanding the test of time is one of the few schools of its kind in Halifax County: Allen Grove Rosenwald School. Making history is a facility on the National Register of Historic Places and started in 1921 to provide an education for African American children.
