Abstract:
Two decades before Rachel Carson became a pioneer for the environmentalist movement, she laid the foundation for marine biologists through her work at a trio of islands south of Beaufort. In addition to the landmark Silent Spring is the perhaps lesser known first book, Under the Sea Wind, inspired by her experiences at Carrot, Town Marsh, and Bird Shoal.
Abstract:
The celebrated wild ponies of the Outer Banks are descendants of the Mustangs left behind by early explorers and colonists. More recently, they run wild in places like Shackleford Banks and are resilient from a diet of sea oats and marsh grass. Their centuries old appeal led to the Colonial Spanish Mustang becoming the official state horse in 2010.
