Abstract:
The North Carolina Teaching Fellows Program, the first in the nation, has awarded nearly 6,800 full college scholarships. The state awards high school graduates a full, four-year college scholarship in exchange for their return to teach in the state’s schools after they finish college. Alumni describe their experiences in the program and how it prepared them for the classroom.

Abstract:
North Carolina hosts more military bases than any other state, including the Army’s Fort Bragg and the Air Force’s Pope Air Force Base. The electric system at the military bases is powered by Sandhills Utility Services, a utility company formed by four Touchstone Energy cooperatives. This article discusses how the electricity system was designed and developed, and the special electric requirements of military operations.

Abstract:
Both Hurricane Ivan and Hurricane Frances had been downgraded to tropical storms by the time they reached western North Carolina. The article discusses how the storms affected electrical service in that part of the state.
