Abstract:
The Hispanic population in the state is approximately 500,000. Many have found work in construction, agriculture, textiles, manufacturing, maintenance, and hospitality. Duplin, Lee, Sampson, Montgomery, and Chatham Counties have the highest percentages of Hispanics. To serve this growing population, a number of the state's electric cooperatives have hired Spanish-speaking customer service representatives.

Abstract:
Laura Bilbro-Berry is a second-grade teacher at John C. Tayloe Elementary in Washington, and North Carolina’s 2000 Teacher of the Year. Bilbro-Berry has also received three Bright Ideas grants from Tideland Electric Membership Corporation. The grants helped to support Bilbro-Berry’s projects, which aimed to relate mathematics to everyday life, teach students about responsibility, and create an aquarium-based ecosphere.

Abstract:
Both Hurricane Ivan and Hurricane Frances had been downgraded to tropical storms by the time they reached western North Carolina. The article discusses how the storms affected electrical service in that part of the state.

Hurricane Floyd hit the North Carolina coast on Wednesday, September 15, and was one of the most costly storms the state has ever experienced. This article discusses how eastern North Carolina communities and electric cooperatives endured the impacts of Hurricane Floyd.
