Since 1924, Butterfields Candy Co. in Nashville, North Carolina has produced old-fashioned hard candies called “Buds.” The candies received national attention in 2007 when celebrity chef Rachael Rey featured them on her show. Since then, the company has revamped the production process and rebranded the business, now turning out 100,000 candies each week.

Claire Ritter is a jazz pianist and composer from Charlotte, North Carolina. She is also a North Carolina Arts Council fellow and four-time recipient of the Arts and Science Council’s Regional Artist Grant. Ritter will perform on October 7 at Queen’s University with her longtime mentor, pianist Ran Blake.

Carrie Hegnauer opened City Kitch in 2013 as a shared kitchen near UNC Charlotte. In 2020, City Kitch partnered with Charlotte investor Todd Collins and his business Red Hill Ventures.

Thomas Morgan’s journey from real estate and green energy to indie filmmaking is itself a film-worthy story. Morgan became a filmmaker by chance after meeting Morgan Spurlock and Susan Sarandon at a party, with whom he discussed the idea of documenting homelessness. The Charlotte producer’s latest film, Soufra, was screened in May as an official selection for the Positive Cinema Week at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival.

North Carolina's snow-sports industry generates $228 million annually.Ski resort centers have been successful in adapting COVID operating procedures. for instance Ski Mountain Resort after implementing safety protocols such as line spacing at ski-lift lines and restricting ski lift chair sharing is moving on with business as usual.. Christmas tree growers have adapted with a 'Choose now, cut later program' to regulate the floe of guests. Biltmore has gone virtual with its popular tree-raising event, as has the National Gingerbread House Completion, a, highly publicized and profitable event held annual at Asheville's Grove Park Inn.
