While North Carolina has seen its fair share of issues in dealing with the management of hazardous wastes, a Greensboro, North Carolina based company is compiling a list of firsts in commercial management of such materials. Ecoflo has become the first company in the US to open a permitted commercial hazardous waste treatment facility under the federal Resource Conservation Act; the first to train personnel to help clients handle wastes; and the first to turn liquid mercury into a disposable solid.

A third of North Carolina's counties are eligible for tax relief due to their rural status. The Jobs Tax Credit program and Industrial Building Renovation Fund are now aiming to attract business growth in rural areas by providing tax credits to companies and manufacturers for each new job, and renovating existing industrial buildings and infrastructure.

Inc., out of High Point and Hickory, North Carolina, is the state's largest manufacturer of corrugated shipping containers that handle many key industries such as furniture and textiles. But at the manufacturing operations, recycling has become a bottom-line priority as well. In one of the most aggressive environmental programs in the industry, Carolina Container utilizes recycled waste paper and virtually no waste in the manufacturing process.

The German steamship BREWSTER, bound for New York from Jamaica in 1909, landed in the middle of the Diamond Shoals. One of the largest ships to run aground with a crew of 33 men, BREWSTER was discovered by three lifesaving crews out of Cape Hatteras and Creeds Hill. The entire crew was saved and 11 men were awarded medals of honor for their part in the rescue.
