Abstract:
At one time eastern North Carolina had a good supply of freshwater. Now aquifers that supply drinking water are dropping, some as much as fifteen feet per year. New state regulations require user restrictions on aquifer withdrawals by up to 75 percent over the next sixteen years. The article discusses this water crisis and the work of ECU geologist Dr. Richard Spruill in dealing with this problem.

Abstract:
The health of eastern North Carolinians lags behind the rest of the state. Early deaths because of accidents are 40 percent higher than elsewhere in the state; stroke, 38 percent higher; diabetes, 28 percent; and heart disease, 23 percent. The article discusses the work of Dr. Christopher J. Mansfield, director of the Center for Health Services Research and Development, in seeking to understand this problem.

An ankle injury ended Walter Triplette's soccer career at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, so he turned to fencing. Today he is the owner of Triplette Competitive Arms, Inc. The company, located near Elkin, makes and sell fencing weapons, masks, tunics, and armor. Between 100 to 200 orders are shipped daily from an inventory worth over $1 million.

Walter Jones, who represents North Carolina's First District in the U.S. House of Representatives, has lived a political life. Prior to his current position, Jones was town councilman and later mayor of Farmville, his hometown; was a three-term Pitt County representative in the N.C. General Assembly; and later served in the State Senate. He was elected to Congress in 1966.

The 1901 home of Dr. Manassa Thomas Pope, a prominent African American physician, businessman, soldier, and politician is being restored. The home was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999. When completed, the Pope House Museum will be \"the only historic house museum of an African American family in North Carolina.\"

Republican Kevin Martin of Weddington is, at 36, the youngest member of the Federal Communications Commission. A 1989 graduate of the University of North Carolina, he earned a law degree from Harvard and held several high-profile positions, including working with White House prosecutor Kenneth Starr and serving as deputy general counsel of George W. Bush's presidential campaign, before being appointed to the FCC.

David S. Lee, curator of birds for the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, retired in the summer of 2003. Lee joined the museum in 1975. A major project of his has been a 25-year study of North Carolina seabirds. Among his many awards for his work in bird conservation is the 2000 Investigation award from International Partners in Flight.

The Minnette C. Duffy Award is the state's highest award for preservation, restoration, or maintenance of grounds related to historic structures. The Albemarle Pee Dee Avenue Cemetery Group, Inc. received the 2002 award for their work in protecting and conserving the unique monuments and history of the Albemarle Cemetery.

The 2002 Ruth Coltrane Cannon Award, North Carolina's most prestigious preservation award, was given to Lillian and Leslie Boney of Wilmington for their more than fifty-year commitment to historic preservation. The Boneys were leaders in the restoration of Wilmington's historic Bellamy Mansion.
