Jesse Ware had an idea to apply modern technology and machinery in the construction of an old-time favorite, - the log cabin. Carolina Log Buildings, located in Fletcher, a subsidiary of Vermont Log Buildings, is the outgrowth of that vision. The company produces pre-cut log packages; for example, there are twenty-six basic packages available, including a motel, restaurants, lodge, and nineteen different model homes.

The company is celebrating its fiftieth anniversary and recorded over $2 million in sales last year. Service divisions of the company now include heating, air conditioning, electrical, plumbing and piping, and security systems.

Houston Brisson founded his company, Peanut Processors, Inc., located in Duplin in 1961. Three plants dry, salt, inspect, grade, package, and ship the product, \"Houston's Roasted Peanuts,\" to all parts of the country. His company is recognized as the largest producer of salted-in-the-shell peanuts in the nation. An estimated 95 percent of the company's production is shipped outside of North Carolina.

The Elmore Company of Spindale incorporated in 1920. The company formed to manufacture, buy, sell, and deal in yarns, and to process, finish, dye, and mercerize yarns. Sewing thread is the company's top product and brings in 75 percent of its total sales.

George W. Isenhour founded the Isenhour Tile & Brick Company in Salisbury in 1896. The family-owned business is now in its fourth generation. The company has introduced a number of firsts in the brick industry, and in 1964, it designed and built the largest and most efficient plant in the country in one location. The plant produced 90 million brick a year.

Power Curbers, Inc. of Salisbury builds equipment for road builders. The company manufactures speedy, slip-form curb and gutter pavers, nine models in all. Sales volume grew from $250,000 in 1959 to $3 million in 1973, with an employee increase from five to seventy-five within the same period.

Electricon, Incorporated was established in 1918 by Oscar Greene Sr., as the Kinston Electric Company. The name changed in 1964 when the firm incorporated. The company employs around 225 people who work in the electrical contracting, heating and air conditioning field.

Kwik-Pik Markets, Incorporated opened its first store in Raleigh eleven years ago. Today, with headquarters in Henderson, Kwik-Pik has 120 stores with over 450 employees in North and South Carolina, Virginia, and Michigan. George Frazier and Grady Tharrington developed the concept. Kwik-Pik's success is based on the fact that shopping is four times faster in them; stores keep longer hours and are open seven days a week, plus holidays; and customers can park right at the front door.

Because there was no such financial institution available, a group of prominent citizens organized Gate City Savings & Loan in Greensboro in 1903. The institution granted the first home loan in December of the same year. Today Gate City has four branch offices in Greensboro, with full-service offices in Eden and Madison-Mayodan.

In 1965, after a seventeen-year career with the Standard Register Company, Richard Hardesty purchased the printing division of the Rowan Printing Company. He changed the name of the firm to Rowan Business Forms, Inc. and went into business. This article recounts the success of his business venture.

The Harrington Manufacturing Company began operations in 1922 in Lewiston, in Bertie County. Its initial product was a peanut picker. The company at first was plagued by the Great Depression and a series of fires, but it persevered. Today Harrington produces a line of farm equipment for tobacco and peanuts and has a dealership chain from Virginia to Florida. Leadership of the company has remained in the Harrington family since the company's founding.

L.A. Reynolds founded his company in the early 1900s with a horse and wagon and fruit trees he sold to Piedmont farmers. After World War II, his four sons expanded the company into construction and landscaping activities. The company, headquartered in Winston-Salem, is one of the ten largest asphalt paving companies in the state, and its commercial landscaping division is one of the most progressive in the country. Gross sales exceeded $10 million in 1972.
