Abstract:
The Harrington Manufacturing Company began operations in 1922 in Lewiston, in Bertie County. Its initial product was a peanut picker. The company at first was plagued by the Great Depression and a series of fires, but it persevered. Today Harrington produces a line of farm equipment for tobacco and peanuts and has a dealership chain from Virginia to Florida. Leadership of the company has remained in the Harrington family since the company's founding.

Abstract:
J. J. (Monk) Harrington begins his seventh consecutive term in the North Carolina General Assembly this year. He is also a successful manufacturer of farm and industrial machinery in his hometown of Lewiston. Harrington Manufacturing Company employs over 1,000, which exceeds the population of Lewiston. Harrington is featured in We the People of North Carolina magazine's Businessman in the News.
