Abstract:
Burroughs-Wellcome, a manufacturer of fine pharmaceuticals, was founded in New York state in 1906. However, the company outgrew its location, and in 1969, decided to relocate to North Carolina. The corporate headquarters and research laboratories will be built in the Research Triangle Park near Raleigh and the manufacturing facility in Greenville.

Ronnie Shavlik, an All-American basketball player at North Carolina State University between 1954 and 1956, is president of the largest contract cleaning company in the state, Carolina Maintenance Company, Inc., of Raleigh. Beginning with one employee in 1957, he now employs 550 workers.

In 1927, C.V. Sellers of Burlington and his brothers purchased a run-down cotton mill at Saxapahaw, on the Haw River, starting what would become the Sellers Mfg. Company. The mill started in the 1840s and closed in 1923.

In 1953, Lester \"Leck\" Helms started Ma Leck Woodcrafts of Wingate as a way to earn a little extra money. What resulted was a booming business that now grosses over $6.5 million a year and employs over five hundred craftsmen in five major plants and a few smaller ones in the Piedmont. His ten original products have grown to over 2,500 items in the area of wooden gifts and decorative accessories.

Snow Lumber Company, organized in 1880 by E. A. Snow and R. F. Dalton, is reportedly the oldest manufacturing concern in High Point. A hallmark of the company is their craftsmanship. The company has two divisions millwork, which manufactures architectural woodwork according to architect's designs and specifications and building materials which supplies the High Point with any type of building supplies.

M. B. Toler, along with a group of experienced and enterprising young men, founded Southern Elevator in 1949. The company has its headquarters and plant in Greensboro with another office and warehouse in Charlotte. Southern Elevator is the only major manufacturer of commercial elevators in North and South Carolina and builds them to suit specific applications.
