This article presents information on the New Town movement, or privately developed communities in which land utilization is planned almost down to the last square foot. The town of Columbia, MD is a good example. At one time it was thought that Soul City in Warren County would the first community developed using this concept. However, that project has been slow in developing, and the Rock Creek Community in Guilford County now appears to be in line to become the first.

First-Citizens Bank and Trust Company is North Carolina's largest State-chartered banking institution. Robert P. Holding, Sr., started the bank in Smithfield seventy-three years ago. When he died in 1957, his three sons took over the banking operations. Today, First-Citizens does business through 157 branch offices in sixty-four communities in thirty-six counties.

Cameron-Brown was founded in Raleigh in 1946 as the Fidelity Bond and Mortgage Company. it was originally started to make home loans to soldiers returning from World War II. Today it is one of the few mortgage companies in the country to service over $1 billion in real estate mortgages. This article presents information on how the company evolved to this level.

Alcoa's Badin Works, located on the Yadkin River in northeastern Stanly County, is observing its fifty-fifth anniversary. The first pound of aluminum was produced there in 1916, and in 1969, over two hundred million pounds were produced and shipped. The Baden Works was the first, and the only, aluminum smelter in the state. Over eight hundred people work there, with a payroll in 1970 in excess of $7 million.
