North Carolina’s electric utilities show substantial progress in their Year 2000 (Y2K) readiness efforts, and most will be ready well in advance of the Y2K date rollover. Millennium-related date problems in most of the electric utility industry will be tested and fixed by June 30, 1999 to ensure that electric systems and computer programs remain on after January 1, 2000.

The North Carolina Electric Membership Corporation, along with Duke Power, North Carolina’s municipal electric utilities, and others, are members of the Southeastern Electric Reliability Council, a regional group established to ensure a reliable and adequate bulk power supply. This article describes how electricity is transmitted throughout the region, and discusses deregulation and other potential changes which may impact North Carolina’s utility industry.

North Carolina experienced several winter storms in January 2000, but the piedmont and foothills regions were especially hard hit from a January 23-25 blizzard whose intensity was not forecast. Governor James Hunt declared a State of Emergency, and thirty-one counties were declared federal disaster areas. This article discusses the blizzard’s impact to the state’s environment, economy, and electric power.
