Abstract:
The lionfish species Pterois miles and Pterois volitans are popular aquarium fishes that have gained recent notoriety as invasive species along the east coast of the United States and the Bahamas. Results from mitochondrial DNA analyses support their recognition as two separate lionfish species.

Abstract:
Fast Technology for Analysis of nucleic acids (FTA) cards are embedded with special chemicals that inhibit degradation of DNA. The FTA card system was tested on marine green and red algae collected in New Hanover County, North Carolina. Overall, the use of FTA cards to preserve marine algal DNA is promising.

Abstract:
The authors discuss a red alga that has recently invaded the coastal waters of North Carolina. It has become abundant in the sounds and estuaries of the southeastern section of the state and is a nuisance for commercial fishing operations and industries drawing water from the lower Cape Fear River. Seasonal growth of the plant was studied at times of coldest and warmest air and water temperatures.

Abstract:
There are sixteen species of the red algal order Rhodymeniales reported from North Carolina waters, but there has been confusion over their taxonomic rank and classification. Phylogenetic analyses reveal a number of species differences, suggesting that Asteromenia is not a monotypic genus.
