"Centuries after the New River drew early settlers to its banks, it inspired the U.S. Marine Corps to choose Jacksonville as the site of Camp Lejeune." Jacksonville prior to the 1840s was originally named Wantland's Ferry. By the end of the second world war, Camp Lejeune was reputed as the most modern Marine base in the nation. Jacksonville today is currently home to some 73,000 residents.

Just prior to the Great Depression, a Gaston County textile mill introduced special khaki weave that served our armed forces with distinction for five decades." Stuart Cramer was perhaps the most extraordinary industrialist and inventor North Carolina ever produced. In designing and building textile mills, he developed the earliest version of air-conditioning to control humidity in these structures. Divesting himself of other businesses on account of poor health, he bought a mill community near Charlotte and later called Cramerton. It became a model for modern mill communities. Cramerton Army Cloth was introduced ther in 1929, which became highly desired the United States military.

Retiring after 30 years spent as an accountant at NC State, Bill Bunn planted 50 pecan trees on his childhood farm in 1981. In 1994, he and Dr. Mike Parker, a fruit and nut tree specialist founded the North Carolina Pecan Growers Association in 1994. Bunn died in 2011 without accomplishing his desire to fill his whole farm with pecan trees. His son-in-law Ben Byrd has since taken over of what is now Lakeview Pecans in Bailey, N.C

"amid the urgency of World War II, an Army training camp sprang up from fields north of Raleigh. Five years later, the camp was no longer needed, but the existing infrastructure attracted new residents. Today, evidence of that brief but impressive history remains part of Butner's very foundation." In 1942, Camp Butner was carved out of a 40,000acre span of farmland, only yo operate until 1947. The town of Butner was operated by the stae of North Carolina until 2007, when it was finally incorporated as a town in its own right.

On ay Street in Fayetteville is the U.S. Army Airborne & Special Operations Museum, which attracts more than three million visitors annually and is the area's largest tourist attraction. Originally known as Camp Bragg, Fort Liberty was founded in 1918.
