Abstract:
"Centuries after the New River drew early settlers to its banks, it inspired the U.S. Marine Corps to choose Jacksonville as the site of Camp Lejeune." Jacksonville prior to the 1840s was originally named Wantland's Ferry. By the end of the second world war, Camp Lejeune was reputed as the most modern Marine base in the nation. Jacksonville today is currently home to some 73,000 residents.
