When World War I broke out in Europe in 1914, Kiffin Rockwell of Asheville and his brother Paul offered their services to France. After serving two years as an infantryman, Rockwell and six other Americans formed a fighter squadron called the Escadrille Lafayette. On May 18, 1916, he became the first American to shoot down an enemy plane. He was killed September 23, 1926 while engaging in his 142nd dogfight.

The North Carolina Natural Heritage Program, a unit of the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources, seeks to identify the rarest examples of plant and animal life in the state and designate where they are located as significant natural heritage areas worthy of protection. Inventories of plants and animals are being conducted in the state's counties. To date, eighty of the one hundred counties have been inventoried, six are in the process, and fourteen are on the waiting list.

The Carolina Ballet Company, founded in Raleigh in 1997, is now in its tenth year. The company has premiered over sixty ballets. Annual tours are made throughout North Carolina, and the ballet has toured in the People's Republic of China, Hungry, and New York City. The Carolina Ballet is recognized by many critics as one of the top ten ballet companies in the country.

In olden days, a city's main street was a hub of activity, but in the 20th-century much of that activity moved to shopping centers. In many of the state's communities, main street is being revitalized. Many of the old mansions have come back to life as bed and breakfast accommodations. Caldwell describes some located right in the heart of town, including The Inn at Brevard (Brevard); Main Street Inn (Highlands); Main Street Inn (Tarboro).
