Abstract:

Shortia is one of North Carolina's and the world's rarest plants. Few people have ever heard of it; fewer still have seen it. In the state the flower is found only in a few places in Burke, Macon, McDowell, and Transylvania Counties. Dean discusses the plant's history from its discovery by French botanist Andre Michaux on September 8, 1788, its rediscovery in 1877, and its current status.

Abstract:

North Carolina possesses a diverse natural landscape from long ocean coastlines to the Piedmont and on to the mountains. It is also a state rich in flora with 3,500 species of vascular plants and 350 mosses. Some of these species are rare, partly because humans destroyed or altered their habitats or because they are an endemic species--one that grows in a very restricted range. Mansburg discusses some of these rare or endangered plants and where the grow in the state.

Abstract:

The North Carolina Natural Heritage Program, a unit of the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources, seeks to identify the rarest examples of plant and animal life in the state and designate where they are located as significant natural heritage areas worthy of protection. Inventories of plants and animals are being conducted in the state's counties. To date, eighty of the one hundred counties have been inventoried, six are in the process, and fourteen are on the waiting list.

Abstract:

North Carolina is home to over 4,000 native flowering plants, and 740 of them are considered rare or significantly rare. A large number of 47 plants is designated threatened. Among these plants are the Appalachian filmy fern, Eastern prairie blue wild indigo, Gray's lily, Georgia aster, Gray's lily, Plymouth gentian, Seabeach amaranth, and Small's portulaca.

Abstract:

Carolina birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus unifoliolatus var. helleri) is an annual plant species of Federal Concern and is significantly rare in North Carolina. Trefoil occurs on mowed roadsides in the North Carolina Piedmont. The phenology and simulated mowing study suggested that mowing during growing seasons could threaten trefoil populations.
