John F. Blair founded John F. Blair, Publisher in Winston-Salem, in 1954, with a primary focus on books about North Carolina. When Blair died in 1986, Carolyn Sakowski had been with the company for nine months. She and a colleague approached the heirs with a plan to keep the publishing company running. John F. Blair, Publisher, repositioned itself with a focus on books from and about the Southeast. Sakowski has been company president since 1992. In 2003, the company had sales of more than $1 million and will soon publish its 400th title.

Press 53, a new, small book publishing company in Winston-Salem, is committed to giving a voice to both classic and cutting edge literature, with an emphasis on the short story. The company publishes poetry, novels, anthologies, novellas, history, and creative nonfiction and has been in business two-and-a-half-years. Two staffers, Kevin Watson and Sheryl Monks do it all.

Alice Gerrard, a Durham area folk musician, is recognized for her contribution to the arts in the Triangle Area. Gerrard, is the publisher and editor of a national magazine devoted to old-time music called The Old-Time Herald. Gerrard’s life and career are examined and she is praised for her work and musical abilities. Gerrard is best known for her folk songs written from the feminist perspective detailing the everyday life of women.
