The front of this card depicts a cheerful face of a young woman with brown curly hair looking out at you from the hole torn in a newspaper. She is smiling with her teeth showing. The title of the newspaper says it is "Hood's Latest." At the bottom is stated: "Hood's Tooth Powder whitens and beautifies the teeth, sweetens the breath, and hardens the gums. Only twenty five cents a bottle." The reverse of the card states that dentists endorse this product and includes three testimonies. Hood's Tooth Powder is prepared only by C. I. Hood and Co., Apothecaries. Lowell, Mass.

The card is small with rounded corners and displays the American flag with 45 stars. The caption below the flag states that "Hood's Sarsaparilla is the Best Money Can Buy." The reverse of the card has the number "E 2" at the top and lists Queen Regent Christina, Senor Sagasta, The Cortes, and Kingdom of Spain inside a rectangle with a star in each corner. This card is from the 1898 Hood's Sarsaparilla War Game Set of 52 cards.

Advertisement for Ayer's Cathartic Pills depicting seven naked boys packing and wrapping wooden boxes of Ayer's Pills. The caption is: "Ayer's Cathartic Pills. A safe pleasant and reliable Family Medicine." Prepared by Dr. J. C. Ayer & Co., Lowell, Mass. The reverse of the card states that Ayer's Pills "are compounded from the extracted and concentrated virtues of purely vegetable substances, and combine the choicest cathartic principles in medicine." Ayer's Pills are adapted for curing ailments of the stomach, liver, and bowels. They cure jaundice, indigestion, headache, dizziness, and biliousness. The pills are put up in wooden boxes, and in damp climates glass vials are used instead.

This card depicts a blonde-haired little girl, dressed in a white lace nightgown with a large pink bow on one shoulder, reclining on her side with her arms around three small kittens while a small dog looks on from behind. "Scott's Emulsion" is written on one of the pillows. At the bottom is "La Nichee (The Nest)" and "Copyright, 1887, by Scott & Browne N. Y." On the bottom left in tiny print is printed "G. H. Buek & Co., Lith., N. Y." The reverse of the card has the title "The Little Pets" and tells of the beautiful little girl and how her health could speedily change. He traveled to New York City and on 1 July set sail for England. On 13 July, Pittman arrived in Liverpool, England. In the rest of the journal he writes about his time in England and then traveling to and explorations in Paris.
