Abstract:
The claim for ownership of a mountain was waged for over a century and involved locals, state and federal authorities, and private interest groups. Officially, much of the land around Mount Mitchell currently belongs to the government. Continuing conservation efforts suggest, though, that ownership, as defined by a sense of responsibility, is still the province of the public.
