James Brooks, who teaches at Wilkes County's West Wilkes High School, is the 2005 winner of the Terry Sanford Award for Creativity in Teaching and Administration. Brooks' award was for his development of a photojournalism class. The Sanford award, created in 1966 and now considered the NCEA's most prestigious award, honors educational contributions of Terry Sanford.

Caroline McCullen, a teacher at Wake County's Ligon GT Magnet Middle School, is the 1996 National Technology Teacher of the Year. The award was given by Microsoft and TECHNOLOGY & LEARNING magazine for outstanding classroom use of technology.

Jeanne Laws (Elkin City High School), Amy Orr Hobbs (Robbinsville High School), Vickie Honeycutt (Mt. Pleasant High School, Cabarrus County), and Judy Lewis (Grantham School) are Regional Teachers of the Year for 2000-2001. Among items the winners receive are a $5,000 stipend, software and computer training, and a one-week seminar at the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching at Cullowhee.

Dawnelle Hyland, a teacher at Chewning Middle School in Durham County, is the 2002 winner of the Terry Sanford Award for Creativity in Teaching. The award, created in 1966, honors the educational contributions of Terry Sanford. Other finalists were Margaret Conner (Forsyth County), Gloria T. Lawrence (Guilford County), and Pat Zimmerman (Dare County).

The state is below the national average in the percentage of male teachers in the classroom, being 19 percent compared to the national 27 percent. Only 14,611 of the state's 76,815 teachers are male. Among factors contributing to this are the low pay compared to other professions and the old bias of \"you're not manly if you're a teacher - unless you're the coach.\"

The ABCs of Public Education plan, passed in 1996 by the General Assembly, seeks to improve education with a system of sanctions and rewards for teachers and schools, based on student test performance. The accountability law is meeting some resistance. Two teachers who were fired under the law are suing the state to get their jobs back.

The All-USA Teacher First Team, sponsored by USA TODAY, recognizes teachers who \"develop ways to ratchet up learning and make academics get real.\" Janie MacIntyre, an Edwards Junior High School teacher in Nash County, was one of 17 teachers nationwide selected for the team. Award winners received a trophy and $2,500 for their schools.
