Abstract:
The farmland of the eastern United States has changed greatly in its configuration, distribution, usage, and ownership since the 1960s. Using a 1960 baseline, the farmland and farms of North Carolina are examined to ascertain the form, processes, locations, and changes in the state's agricultural geography.

"Wake County farmer shares his story of land preservation with a growing population of new neighbors." John Burt takes opportunity in educating neighbors in housing developments springing up around his farm. At 700 acres, Burt's "Iron Horse Farms" in Fuquay-Varina has been in his family since the 1750s. It was a King George II land grant. Burt is president of Wake County Farm Bureau.
